Tom Mahon; glassroots
After 30 years in Silicon Valley writing about technology, I became interested in a much older use of silicon – creating art glass. It amazed me to realize that microprocessors and stained glass windows are composed of the same raw material: sand.
Different religions have used different art forms for expression (as the Hebrews used poetry and Taoists used calligraphy). Christianity appeared about the time that glass blowing was invented so we have those great old mosaics and stained glass pieces which are still very impressive. What inspires me now is to articulate a vision of “sacred” appropriate to how we understand the universe today – so different from what was known 2,000 years ago.
I apply new technologies in glass production (a spinout of the space program) to the ancient craft of glassmaking in the hope of creating a new visual vocabulary that speak to the eye, the mind, the heart and the spirit. Available for commission work. 925.200.5165; tmahon3@earthlink.net
