About the Guan Yin Session

One of the most well-known and beloved figures in Mahayana Buddhism, Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva [Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit], symbolizes the universal human potential for great compassion. Her name, “Guan Shi Yin”, means “The One Who Hears the Sounds of the World”. She is often depicted with a thousand hands and eyes to represent her ability to hear the cries of the world and respond to the suffering of living beings. The contemplative practices around Guan Yin Bodhisattva centers on activating and deepening our own innate compassion and insight, particularly through returning our awareness to focus within.

The Guan Yin Session is a practice-oriented retreat that focuses on the cultivation technique of reciting Guan Yin Bodhisattva’s name. Participants will learn about the teachings of Guan Yin Bodhisattva while immersing themselves in the devotional practice of recitation for 7 days. This is a disciplined spiritual practice that is akin to Chan meditation, which allows practitioners to slowly quiet their thoughts and bring their awareness to a single-minded focus. The recitation allows us to tap into the human potential for compassion symbolized by Guan Yin Bodhisattva, and thereby bring forth our own innate capacity for great compassion.
