October 19th, 7:40 pm - 9:10 pm

DRBU Conference Room

7:40 - 8:40 pm  |   The Century of the Self, Part 2: “The Engineering of Consent”*

8:40 - 9:10 pm  |   Discussion

This documentary screening of The Century of the Self (Edward Curtis, 2002) is aimed at inspiring and broadening discussions around DRBU’s academic programs, particularly readings of Sigmund Freud’s Civilization and its Discontents, a core text in both the MA and BA programs. This film explores the aftermath of Freud’s psychological perspective on western civilization, and how these perspectives played out American culture, politics, and economics.

Part II: The Engineering of Consent

Where once the political process was about engaging people's rational, conscious minds, as well as facilitating their needs as a society, the documentary shows how by employing the tactics of psychoanalysis, politicians appeal to irrational, primitive impulses that have little apparent bearing on issues outside of the narrow self-interest of a consumer population.

*This is the second of a four-part documentary series. We invite feedback on scheduling for future screenings, and will set aside discussion time to schedule the screening for parts three through four.
