For people seeking to deepen their understanding, the Buddhist Sutras offer the primary teachings that have guided scholars and practitioners for thousands of years. In one of these sacred texts, the “Entering the Dharma Realm” chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra, the Buddha tells an epic narrative about a young boy who goes on a pilgrimage to fifty-three teachers who instruct him how to progress on the path to awakening.
