The classical language of ancient India. In India it functioned as a lingua franca in much the same way as Latin did in medieval Europe. In India Buddhist texts were written either in Sanskrit or in closely related ‘dialects,’ which were natural spoken languages, such as Pali or Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit.
