Avalokiteśvara [Bodhisattva]
One of the four Bodhisattvas of greatest importance in Mahayana Buddhism, Avalokiteśvara is the Bodhisattva of Compassion and disciple and future successor of the Buddha Amitābha in the Western Pure Land.

His name, which is Sanskrit, is often translated as Observer of the Sounds of the World. It can also be interpreted as meaning Contemplator of Self-Mastery.
